Summer Fest lights up city June 21st, 2012:
Annual party runs till July 1
Summer Fest is back with all the usual crowd pleasers plus several new family-friendly events.
The 17-day riverfront festival started Thursday and runs until July 1. Organizers expect more than 500,000 visitors through the next two weeks.
"Our big feature is the big 1812 bicentennial commemoration," said David Grimaldi, director of business development at Windsor Parade Corporation, the not-for-profit Summer Fest organizers.
Grimaldi said noon Friday the Appledore IV tall ship will anchor at Dieppe Park for tours of the vessel. He said a partnership with Detroit River Days Festival this year has enabled re-enactors to stage a Detroit River battle.
Saturday afternoon, 1812 re-enactors will duel from the Appledore IV tall ship and riverfronts on both sides of the border.
The buskers, the 36th annual International Tug Boat Race and carnival rides and games have returned for another season. The 54th annual Target Fireworks display will soar in the sky June 25 at 10:06 p.m.
However, though this year's show will go on, the fate of the annual fireworks show is uncertain as the City of Detroit is on the brink of bankruptcy.
"We're not worried," Grimaldi said, about the annual event that has drawn millions of spectators to the riverfront. "We'll pursue that after fireworks this year. The political atmosphere is very fluid so.I'm sure there's going to be a way to resolve it."
A fireworks party will take place directly on the Riverfront just east of Plaza Udine. A $100 ticket will cover a gourmet meal featuring local wines, entertainment by Nemesis and the White Pines Dancers and a front-row seat to the fireworks.
The Canada Day Parade will begin at 11 a.m. and travel east on Wyandotte Street East at Devonshire Road. The giant birthday cake will be cut at 1 p.m.
Those who miss the fireworks can catch a special presentation featuring highlights of the event, accompanied by music, on a 70-foot screen in the Festival Plaza July 1 at dusk.
